End Of Summer Skin Care, from TALK Magazine
Our staff was recently interviewed to help readers improve their after-summer skin. Quotes from our own Lyn Smeak's interview for TALK magazine and GreenvilleOnline.com
Exfoliate
“Exfoliation is basically removing the top dead cells on the surface of the skin,” Smeak says. “It can help with hydration, pigment irregularities, texture and clarity of the skin.”
Smeak says one of the best — and most simple — ways to exfoliate the skin is dermaplaning, known as the lunch-hour makeover because it’s done within an hour and there is no downtime.
“On its own, dermaplaning is very simple and makes the skin more receptive to products and hydration that otherwise wouldn’t be able to get past that dead skin cell layer,” she says. “It can be very effectively teamed with a moisture mask or clarify mask for acne or chemical peel for other things like aging skin.”
Smeak suggests using a Clarisonic face brush, which is sold at many spas and beauty stores.
“If your skin is well exfoliated, a cleaning brush will really be able to give you a deep clean in your pores,” Smeak says. “The sonic technology really knocks out debris and makeup that can keep deep down in the skin. It works 11 times better than manual cleaning.”
Sunscreen is important year-round
The UV rays from sun exposure can cause premature aging, and experts recommend using a daily moisturizer with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.
“Don’t ease up on your daily sunscreen just because it’s fall,” Smeak says. “It is the cumulative damage of the sun that really affects the skin.”
It’s also important to cover not just your face, but your neck (including the sides and back) and the upper chest with sunscreen.
