Buttock Enhancment: Use Your Own Fat
Transferring a patient's own fat from areas of excess to areas of deficiency has a long history of safety and efficacy. However, recent years have featured reports of patient complications with buttock fat grafting. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and international plastic surgery organizations responded to these reports with research, expert review and assessment (Gluteal Fat Grafting Task Force). They have released a list of recommended precautions for surgeons. We are happy to report that our techniques already align with their recommendations:
We use rigid cannulas of appropriate diameter. We use access incisons that allow superficial cannula paths. We carefully monitor the location of the cannula tip and inject fat while withdrawing the devce. We limit injection to the subcutaneous fat layer. We recommend staged procedures for patients wanting more generous changes. And we include discussion of serious complications with prospective patients.
While the Task Force was doing it's evaluation, we waited for their recommendations. Now we can resume treating interested patients with the benefit of their additional review.
