Breast Reconstruction / Mastectomy: Case 5 (12177)
Description
This 54 year old woman was referred by her oncologic breast surgeon for discussion of immediate bilateral breast reconstruction. She had recently had a right breast biopsy / lumpectomy that showed carcinoma-in-situ. She had a family history of breast cancer. After discussion with her breast surgeon, she decided on prophylactic (preventative) mastectomy of both breasts. She wanted information about breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy. Dr. Graham reviewed her health, lifestyle, risk factors, surgical options and she chose tissue expander-implant reconstruction. Mastectomy and tissue expander placement were scheduled at the same time, a few months later reconstructive implants were placed (out-patient), and then nipple reconstruction followed by areola pigmentation (tattoo) (in-office procedures). Her final result reveals good symmetry and as per her desires, breasts larger than her pre-op size (38 B-C to 38D).
