Breast Ruptured Gel Implants: Case 3 (07185)
Description
This 74 year old woman was referred to us after a mammogram showed that her silicone gel implants were leaking. She had not experienced problems or symptoms (silent rupture) and her implants had been in place for 45 years. Since 1974. She had no history of breast disease. Her left breast pocket was hardened, a condition known as capsular contracture. She wore a 34 DD bra. She wanted her old implants removed, and smaller, lifted breasts afterward. After Dr. Graham's examination and discussion, he recommended she would have enough natural breast tissue for a 34 C after surgery. We scheduled removal of the implants, removal of the entire scar capsule surrounding those implants (which reduces the chances of spillage of the loose gel), and breast lift. No replacement implant was placed. Her implants were on top of the pectoral muscle (subglandular). Her primary care doctor had no health concerns about her undergoing surgery.
