Male Breast / Gynecomastia: Case 7 (2545863)
Description
This fit active 37 year old man consulted us to remove unwanted excess male breast tissue. This gynecomastia problem developed gradually in adolescence and had not improved with time. He had excellent pectoral muscle development, but this only projects the overlying excess gland and fat further forward. The pectoral muscle lower border was partially obscured by the soft fullness under his skin. He did not have any medical condition, hormonal imbalance, or medication side effects as the root cause. No additional tests were necessary. Surgical options included liposuction and complete gland removal. Lipo was not suggested because too much excess tissue would be left behind. Gland removal is technically known as subcutaneous mastectomy. This is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours depending on the extent of the excess. The incision is limited to the lower half of the edge of the pigmented areola, and is very minimal as can be seen in the postop photos. Recovery usually involves less than one week out of work and three weeks without vigorous exercise. A compression vest or shirt is worn for a few weeks. The pectoral muscle is not effected by this procedure, which actually improves the appearance of the pecs.
